Just like each and every other millennial who tuned in to the Super Bowl game, I was there to watch the halftime show.
A ton of famous names were headlining: Dr. DRE, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem (and a surprise visit from 50 Cent). It was a dream come true. I was so excited.
Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Z were hit hardest by the COVID-19 economy. These generations grew up on this music, either hearing it for the first time on their car radio, or hearing it on their dad's workout playlist. Either way, seeing some of the icons we grew up with helped us heal a bit emotionally.
I know some people are going to be like "it was a halftime show, it wasn't that deep." If you have the inclination to do this, this wasn't for you. Thousands are sharing their experience: we felt seen and heard. There was finally a performance for us and after the past few years, we deserve it!
I love the respect that Eminem showed for his fellow performers. In the moment, it took me a minute to realize. While I have so much respect for this, I hope that one day this is the norm.
I used to think a lot differently than I do now. Racial injustice is real, and I've been so happy to see black spectators talking about how much respect they have for what he did. Let's make this the norm and not something that someone has to be thanked for, but rather the natural reaction to racial injustice.
