5 Best Spooky Podcasts for True Crime Lovers

Ever since I’ve gotten my new job, I’ve been enduring a longer commute. Rather than listening to music or audiobooks every day, I love to listen to true crime on Apple Podcasts.

​There’s a whole section for it on Apple Podcasts where you can explore different shows, but today I wanted to focus on sharing my favorite True Crime podcasts. Of course, these are enjoyable year-round, but they are also great for those spooky fall evenings around the firepit or just to pop on while you’re cleaning.

1. MORBID | ALAINA & ASH

I did my fair share of searching when looking for a podcast that would quench my thirst for all things spooky and true crime, and Morbid was the perfect fit. This has to be my favorite podcast because the two hosts not only talk about true crime, but also tell listener-submitted tails and talk about hauntings.

​​It seems Alaina and Ash have been best friends forever, which makes them play really well off of one another.

They always do a thorough job on researching. Questions may pop up in my mind about where the story is going, and they are almost immediately answer them.
 
They also really love their fanbase, and their chatter prior to covering their cases is something I actually enjoy listening to, unlike some other podcasts where it seems people go on and on about things that aren’t even important or interesting.
 
I would highly recommend this podcast! They’ve got more than 400 episodes to binge.

2. MILE HIGHER | KENDALL & JOSH

​I’ve always been a fan of Kendall Rae on YouTube. She does such amazing work with telling the stories behind some of the most prolific murder cases that are currently active, and does the same with cases that have been solved or are still open but may be a little older.
 
I was excited to listen to an episode of Mile Higher when I started having a longer commute, and I just love the dynamic between Kendall and her husband, Josh. 

They are also really thorough and make a ton of effort to include family members who have lost their loved ones, usually in open or recently shut cases.

Kendall has always been a great inspiration to me because she does a lot of fundraising for various organizations that assist families who have lost their loved ones. They do this by providing a portion of their sales from their merch to the organizations.
 
They have about 200 episodes on the podcast, but you can also watch Kendall cover a variety of cases on her YouTube channel, Kendall Rae.

3. UNSOLVED MURDERS | CARTER & MCKENZIE

I’ve been so caught up with some of the other podcasts, that I didn’t notice that Unsolved Murders hadn’t posted since May 2021. I’m not sure what happened, but I know that there are a ton of episodes available. This podcast is perfect for people who like a bit of reenactment in their podcasts. Voice actors work with Carter and McKenzie to reenact different conversations that were a part of the cases they cover. 

They do tend to cover older cases, but the storytelling aspect is amazing! The only downside is that due to the storytelling, they usually have to break their podcasts into parts so they are easily digestible. They have more than 200 episodes available for listening. 

4. CRIME JUNKIE | ASHLEY & BRIT

​This is a relatively new podcast for me, but it was among the top results in the True Crime section on Apple Podcasts, so I gave it a go.
 
I like that these episodes are just as small and digestible as Unsolved Murders. This podcast also features solved cases, missing person cases, mysterious deaths and infamous murders.

​They actually label their episodes this way, which is really great for listeners who are interested in specific true crime cases. For example, the open cold cases are difficult for me because there is no resolution yet, though I do listen to them sometimes to see if there is any way I can help as a listener.
 
I like that there is background music that kind of sets the mood for the episode. This seems to be a lot more scripted than Morbid. The episodes I’ve listened to have been one person telling a story, so there isn’t that banter between two people. I’m sure there are episodes that do work that way, but I haven’t been able to enjoy them yet.
 
The episodes aren’t numbered, but it has been active since 2017, so there are a ton of episodes to listen to. 

5. MY FAVORITE MURDER | KAREN & GEORGIA

This has to be everyone’s favorite. I’m adding it because I do enjoy some episodes, but I feel like there’s a lot of extra discussion that takes away from the topic at hand. I sometimes found myself skipping through the talk at the beginning just to find the story.
 
But I know that a lot of people enjoy that and feel connection with it. 

I do believe the show is really successful and the coverage is great! It’s nice that they have mini episodes and longer ones that can fit different commute times.
 
They have nearly 700 episodes! So there are so many ways to enjoy this podcast.
