Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I like to think I know a lot about it already. However, I find myself learning more and more each year when I do my annual Spooktober series. In today’s blog post, I wanted to share 8 interesting Halloween facts with you all.
1: THE TOP PUMPKIN PRODUCING STATE IS ILLINOIS
2: THE HOLIDAY IS CENTURIES OLD
Originally, the holiday of Halloween was celebrated as an end-of-summer festival and marked the end of fall harvest times. Obviously, the holiday developed different traditions, but the act of trick-or-treating came sooner rather than later. In medieval times, youngsters dressed in costumes would go knocking on neighbors’ doors to perform a song or trick for food or money!
3: A HALLOWEEN TRADITION TO FIND A HUSBAND?
You read that right. Young women in the 18th century developed rituals for Halloween that would help them catch a man! They would throw apple peels over their shoulders. It was said the first initial of their future husband could be seen in the pattern of the fallen peels!
4: ANIMAL SUPERSTITIONS
5: A LOT OF TRADITIONS CAME FROM THE IRISH
6: A GREAT MAGICIAN DIED ON ALL HALLOWS EVE
I had no idea, but apparently Harry Houdini, the renowned magician, died on Oct. 31, 1926, from a ruptured appendix. For some reason, I always though Houdini died from performing one of his renowned tricks, but it seems I was wrong!
7: MORE CANDY IS PURCHASED ON HALLOWEEN THAN ON V-DAY
8: CANDY CORN IS THE MOST PRODUCED HALLOWEEN CANDY
I was shocked to learn this because almost everyone I know hates the stuff, despite my love for it. Apparently nearly 35 million pounds of it is produced each and every year.
I hope you enjoyed this fun list, and I hope you learned something new. I know I did. Have a great day and be sure to check back here or over at YouTube.com/gemusiclover throughout the month of October for Spooktober 2021.
